Checking For Bad Sectors On Mac

How to check whether there is bad sector on a USB harddisk on OS X? (2012-02-27) links to another related question. More recently, in Ask Different: Figuring out bad sectors in my Macintosh HD (2013-03-05) Whatever you use. Be aware that relocation (or remapping or sparing,. Three beeps from your Mac at startup: Before the boot chimes sound at startup, your Mac will run a rudimentary check to ensure RAM is available and accessible. If not, then you will hear a series.

  1. When you have prepared a backup, shut down the Mac and then press and hold Option (Alt), Command, and R while starting the computer. Keep holding the keys until the Apple logo or spinning Globe appears. From the macOS Utilities window, select Disk Utility.
  2. Disk Genius is one of the most popular hard disk management tools among IT.
I posted this piggybacking on an older topic, but there was no response. I'll try a as new topic post.
MacBook, not quite three-and-a-half years of smooth sailing for the most part. But machine's been a tad sluggish as of late, fans working harder--though it a hot summer, and warm in my place.
It starts up, runs OK, and after clearing up a lot of space on it--got all of the music off it--and it's working alright. Safari is prone to quitting unexpectedly sometimes, but the computer is certainly nor dead.
I wanted to check things out anyway, and did a safe boot and ran disk utility to check the hard drive. Could not complete the task of repair, had the red text 'volume damage'. Did the check a few times came up with the 'invalid node' and 'catalog b' error messages.
OK, start to search around to find an answer to the trouble. Apple Hardware test cames back clean. Went with applejack, but it, too, exits the operation, saying disk malfunction. Something with an error in disk directory. I'm getting confused, sorry. Next is Disk Warrior, and it also reports disk malfunction, can't repair. I thought, maybe misguidedly, that is could/would repair the disk directory.
I've also done the fsck thing in Terminal, but it stops the 'disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (undefined)' 'invalid node structure', and 'rebuilding catalog B tree' messages.
And although my computer is running, it starts up everytime, isn't crashing, it's better to be proactive. ( I had been considering getting an external hard drive for backup, but now I have to think about getting a replacement hard drive for this machine, if I want to still keep using it--and I do, it's fine for what I do.) But first, better to find out what's wrong with what I have now.
So I'm mulling over where to go next, doing my research, and saw in another post a suggestion for the SMART utility.
Down'ed it, ran it, and I'm not able to grasp exactly what the report is saying, I don't that knowledge, but from the report the hard drive has one pending bad sector, and six reallocated bad sectors. And I see from the attributes report, there's one reallocated event. Total errors, 170. Last one, uncorrectable error. Short test was completed without an error. But overall, it's yellow, 'failing', at the bottom.
I've backed up all the music and photos on the machine, onto DVDs. I don't mind to try to do a clean and erase install, the 'broad brush' approach, and one of the two suggestions from the other post. The other suggestion was for Disk Controller Firmware, to perform a WRITE of bad blocks. Given what I have described as the results of the SMART diagnosis, would that be viable? Or go straight to the 'broad brush' approach?
Appreciate any help on this.
